DSTV no signal – Where has it gone?

Well, nowhere really. The DSTV signal is continuously radiatting down from the IS20 satellite from a distance of 36 000 km away. So why are you having issues with he DSTV no signal problem? Let’s explore simple possibilities and solutions that you might wanna check before calling out your DSTV installer.

Where to begin diagnosing your DSTV no signal issue?

Start by your decoder. The connectors that attach your cables to the decoder are a big factor in fault finding your DSTV no signal issue. Your decoder should have a number of white or black PVC coated cables called coaxial cable running into them either directly from the lnb or from a distribution relay point. F-type connectors are attached to the ends of these cables and are used to turn in and secure the cables to the decoder via the ports protruding from the set top box. Unscrew these connectors noting the order in which you do.

Inspect in and around the connectors ensuring that none of the steel braiding from the cable is making contact with the inner copper coated conductor. This is also a big factor that gets overlooked when testing for the DSTV no signal issue. Test the connectors for excessive play and replace if needed. Also test how easily the connectors slip of by lightly tugging at them to ensure that they’ll stay in place should the decoders be moved for housekeepig purposes.

Testing for signal

No re-attach the cables and connectors in the order that you untied them. Switch on your decoder and flip through the various channels. Move onto the next step if you have no success and the DSTV no signal issue persists.

Inspect your cable

There are namely three reasons for the no DSTV signal issue popping up out of the blue. Poorly terminated connector, equipment failure and weathering. Let’s touch on the third point. Inspect your cable for anything that out of the ordinary. A twist or a kink might be the culprit. Connecting barrel joints would be a very good place to start. Once again check your f-type connectors for free play or possible short circuiting. Replace the connectors and the barrel if your in any doubt about their condition.

Joints and switches

Ideally you will have a solid cable running from the LNB on the dish to your decoder. You need to inspect all switches and joints and their F-type connectors as before if you have them installed.

Weathering

Low end equipment are very sensitive to weathering.

  • Outside cable – Check the exposed cable on the outside of your home. This cable will need to be replaced if it is brittle, hard and cracked and exposing the inner braiding. Bend the cable to test how brittle it is. Faulty cable will crack easily.
  • Satellite dish – The purpose of your dish is to reflect very feint incoming signal that has traveled 36 000 km from space and focus it onto the LNB. The distance and angle of the LNB mount are important as is the reflective surface of the dish. DO NOT COMPROMISE ON THIS AS YOU WILL HAVE ENDLESS PROBLEMS. Replace rusty and weathered equipment immediately.
  • LNB – Inspect the LNB for cracks and discoloration. Replace it you are unsure.

One thing left to do

After performing this DIY audit you have done the best you could possibly do. The last and final step is to either call an Accredited DSTV installer or take the decoder into a Mulitchoice Agency for testing.
